Coronavirus diary, Tuesday 8 September

Rare good news for old people. Life seems to be getting a little safer.

The number of cases has dropped dramatically since those early days when coronavirus was rife amongst us, especially care home residents.

Recent figures show a far larger proportion of younger people - the under forties - are being affected.

No surprise, as the reopening of social life, pubs and clubs, has encouraged  them to crowd back - often literally - despite the safe distance advice.

The pictures of hundreds on 'raves', risking heavy fines is worrying.

Resuming normal life is bound to increase risks but caution and commonsense should keep them manageable.

The time had come for an exit from lockdown and the restrictions we have endured for six months, but it needs to be an orderly, sensible transition.

The safe return to schools is critical for children, parents and for the economy and so far this appears to be successful.

It needs to be, as further interruption, even on a local basis, would be a serious set back.

The large leap in the number of cases - 3,000 reported in one day - described by Health Secretary for England Matt Hancock as  'concerning' - is another reminder that we are not out of the coronavirus woods yet.

There is a disappointment for us at Sunrise with a member of the care team reported as testing positive, especially as every rule has been followed, every precaution taken, to keep us safe.

We could not be better cared for and we feel sorry for the team, and we share their disappointment.
