Coronavirus diary, Sunday 10 May

'We're all going on a summer holiday  No more work for a week or two

That's the happy Cliff Richard song we were all singing in 1963. But we are not singing it today. It looks as if this year's summer holidays have been cancelled. No one will be off around the world to the beaches and mountains, instead, perhaps, looking nostalgically at old holiday photographs. Last summer seems a long time ago.

Other  countries with the same clampdown include France, New Zealand and Australia. Passengers arriving in Austria have to be quarantined for two weeks unless they have a free from infection certificate while  passengers arriving at Vienna airport pay 190 euros for a Coronavirus test.

Not surprisingly, the aviation industry is up in the air about it.
The number of flights that had plummeted  to a mere ten percent has recently been picking up, Over 700 flights arrived in Britain one day last week. British Airways says it would not resume flying people into Britain if they had to self isolate for two weeks.

The effect on the industry and the country's economy would be disastrous, complains the Airport Operators Association.
The reduction of flights will no doubt please the eco campaigners and boost the staycation move to holidays at home but we will have to wait even for those.

My cruise to the Canaries cancelled, I hope to be off on a winter holiday.
